When a tooth’s inner pulp becomes infected or damaged, fast and effective treatment is essential to eliminate pain and save the tooth. At Paradigm Endodontics, Dr. Ankur Talati and Dr. Alejandro Carrasco specialize in advanced endodontic procedures, including pulpotomies.
Often referred to as a “baby root canal,” a pulpotomy is a vital, tooth-saving procedure designed to treat infection and restore oral health. Whether it’s for a child’s primary tooth or an adult’s developing tooth, our team focuses on providing a relaxing, comfortable, and pain-free patient experience.
Deep within the protective enamel of every tooth lies the dental pulp—a delicate network of nerves, blood vessels, and tissues that keep the tooth healthy and alive.

When a cavity becomes too deep or a tooth suffers from sudden trauma, bacteria can penetrate this pulp chamber, causing painful inflammation and infection.
During a pulpotomy, our skilled endodontists remove only the diseased or infected portion of the pulp from the crown of the tooth, leaving the healthy pulp inside the tooth roots completely intact. A specialized, medicated dressing is then carefully applied to the remaining healthy tissue. This medicine soothes the nerve, prevents further infection, and promotes natural healing. Finally, the tooth chamber is sealed to protect it from future decay.
While this procedure is most commonly performed on deciduous (baby) teeth to prevent premature tooth loss, it is also occasionally used to save permanent teeth that are still developing.

Not at all. At Paradigm Endodontics, we use highly effective local anesthesia to ensure the affected tooth and surrounding area are completely numb before the procedure begins. Most patients report that the procedure feels no different than getting a standard dental filling. In fact, a pulpotomy relieves the severe pain caused by the infected pulp.
A pulpotomy is often referred to as a “partial root canal.” During a pulpotomy, only the infected pulp within the crown (top) of the tooth is removed, while the healthy pulp in the roots is preserved. In a full root canal, all of the pulp is removed from both the crown and the root canals. Pulpotomies are quicker, less invasive, and usually performed on baby teeth.
Baby teeth play a crucial role in a child’s early development. They help children chew properly, speak clearly, and—most importantly—act as natural space maintainers for the developing permanent teeth underneath. Losing a baby tooth prematurely can cause adjacent teeth to shift, leading to severe crowding and the need for complex, expensive orthodontic treatments in the future.
Recovery is typically very fast. Some mild sensitivity or minor discomfort may occur for a day or two as the numbness wears off, which can easily be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. We generally recommend avoiding sticky or hard foods immediately after the procedure to protect the tooth’s temporary or permanent seal.
